Manufacturing Diversification
In 2007 DEGC commissioned a detailed target industries study that identified industries and companies that have the most likelihood of staying and growing here because of Detroit?s competitive advantages, such as its:
-
Manufacturing expertise and skilled labor
-
International border and logistics and transportation infrastructure
-
University, medical and other research facilities
-
Creative community
-
Vibrant cultural and entertainment activities
-
Riverfront and other recreational spaces
DEGC has used that information to focus its business attraction and retention efforts on several key industries:
-
Medical devices
-
Wind energy
-
Defense
-
Aerospace.
These industries have good growth potential and build on Detroit?s manufacturing and other strengths. DEGC has specific business development programs for manufacturers and other businesses.
Automotive Manufacturing Diversification
We are working with partners to help manufacturing companies find new customers outside the automotive industry. The Michigan Manufacturing Technology Center and the University of Michigan are working with the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) to assist manufacturers in developing market diversification strategies. Through the effort, local manufacturers with a potential to diversify may be eligible for a matching grant from the Economic Development Job Training program to assist in the diversification process.
