New DEGC Board Chair Looks Ahead to 2018

Jan 11, 2018

From Jerry Norcia
I’m honored to have been elected chair of the Detroit Economic Growth Corporation’s Board of Directors, succeeding Jim Vella. As president and chief operating officer of DTE Energy, I have seen DEGC’s leadership in Detroit’s economic recovery and ongoing revitalization. I also see a clear parallel between DTE and DEGC; both companies are a force for growth and prosperity in Detroit through their philanthropy, volunteerism and economic development. I am excited to apply my experiences at DTE in a way that is productive and progressive for DEGC’s many stakeholders.

I’m very fortunate to be taking the reins from Jim, who did a great job during his 2-year tenure as chair. Under Jim’s leadership, DEGC achieved many wins for Detroit, including Little Caesars Arena, Flex-N-Gate, and programs such as Motor City Match and Motor City Re-Store that support neighborhood retail. Jim also was instrumental in developing partnerships with critical funding sources. We’re all very happy that Jim will continue to serve on the DEGC Board’s Executive Committee.

I’m also thankful to be working with Glen W. Long, Jr., DEGC CFO and interim president and CEO, and the entire DEGC staff during this extraordinary time in Detroit’s history. The team’s vision and vast experience in community outreach, philanthropy, catalytic development and corporate responsibility is elevating DEGC’s positive influence on the city’s economy.

Throughout Detroit and beyond, DEGC has a great reputation because it delivers impactful results. That includes attracting foreign investment, creating private/public partnerships, managing real estate assets for development, and establishing programs for small-business owners and entrepreneurs. With a focus on inclusion, access and neighborhood revitalization, DEGC is creating economic opportunity for all Detroiters and driving growth citywide.

As chair, I am committed to helping DEGC play an even larger role in Detroit’s economic ecosystem. One of my top priorities is to work with our Executive Committee to identify a permanent President and CEO that is as committed to and passionate about Detroit as our current board and staff. I look forward to meeting everyone on the team, and learning how we can help position the organization for even greater success.

Best wishes and happy holidays.
