Detroit and its surrounding metropolitan area are fast becoming a great tourism destination, coming off an exciting 2006 Super Bowl event where the city shined. With the multitude of arts, culture, sports, and entertainment options available, it’s easy to see why 19 million visitors come to downtown Detroit every year.

Detroit has a unique position within the Midwest tourism market as a center for gaming, sports, music, and other entertainment. Visitors have the opportunity to visit the gaming tables at Motor City Casino, Greektown Casino and MGM Casino, catch a Detroit Tigers baseball, Red Wings hockey, Pistons basketball, or Lions football game.

There is music and festivals year round, but the summer is opened by the Detroit Electronic Music Festival during Memorial Day weekend and closed with the Ford International Jazz Festival over Labor Day weekend. Downtown Detroit has seen a boost, as great new public spaces are completed, including Campus Martius Park and the RiverWalk.

There are a wide variety of places to stay in Detroit, and the city has recently increased the number of downtown hotel rooms by 54% with the additional of the new Westin Book Cadillac Hotel, the Pick-Fort Shelby Hotel, and the three new 400-room casino hotels.

Detroit has enormous capacity for conventions. Not only do conventions have access to the COBO Conference and Exhibition Center, a 2.4 million square foot complex located downtown along the riverfront, but they also can be accommodated at the Detroit Marriott Hotel in the Renaissance Center, the new convention space in the three new casino hotels, and new space to be built as part of the Pick-Fort-Shelby hotel project.

Of course, with renowned museums and attractions, there are many fun things to do in Detroit and the region for families. These include the newly expanded Detroit Institute of Arts, Detroit Science Center, Detroit Zoological Institute, Henry Ford Museum, and Cranbrook Art Museum and Science Center.
