BACK TO PARADISE:
DETROIT'S HISTORIC DISTRICT REBORN
WHAT IS THE HISTORY OF
PARADISE VALLEY?
Paradise Valley was once the heartbeat of Black Detroit. The district housed legendary jazz clubs where national acts performed and Black-owned businesses thrived.
But mid-20th-century urban renewal projects dismantled this vibrant district, displacing the very community that made it special.
Today, the district's revival centers Black ownership and honors the entrepreneurs and cultural pioneers who built Paradise Valley's rich history. The Detroit Economic Growth Corporation (DEGC) and the Downtown Development Authority (DDA), the driving forces behind this redevelopment, created this 7-part docuseries to provide an inside look at the district’s economic transformation and significance through historical narratives, interviews and exclusive behind-the-scenes footage.
